BLAINE, Minn. (April 2, 2008) – Thanks to a special sponsorship by Farmers Insurance, the staff of the Schwan Super Rink will repaint six sheets of ice pink for the Stick It to Cancer Hockey Tournament, April 18-20. The tournament’s mission is to raise funds to help combat breast cancer.
The tournament, to be held on the campus of the National Sports Center (NSC) in Blaine, Minn., will feature a total of 96 girls’ and women’s hockey teams from around the Midwest.
Painting will begin at 11 p.m. on Thursday, April 17, and will last approximately an hour and a half. Media are invited and encouraged to attend.
“It’s probably safe to say that this is the first breast cancer benefit tournament anywhere in the world to feature six rinks of pink ice,” said NSC Chief Communications Officer Barclay Kruse. “We’re having fun with this, but the pink ice has a serious message. We’re hoping it will generate momentum to set a tournament record for fundraising.”
The University of Minnesota Cancer Center is the designated recipient of the proceeds and donations from participating teams. Last year, the Cancer Center received $45,000, and it is anticipated that the 2008 tournament will draw a greater amount, with a push from the pink ice.
Tournament hours are Friday from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The tournament is open to the public. Daily admission is $8 for adults and $6 for students or an all-tournament pass can be purchased for $20 and $15, respectively.
An all-you-can-eat waffle breakfast, sponsored by the Park and Sell Auto-Mart in Ham Lake, and a silent auction will also be held to assist in raising much-needed funds.
About the Stick-It to Cancer Tournament:
Teaming with the Schwan Super Rink, female hockey players and their families created the Stick It to Cancer Tournament in 1998 as a way of fighting breast cancer through the sport they love. Between 75 and 100 teams from the Midwest are featured annually to support this worthy cause.
