Trinidad & Tobago National Cycling Team Holds Training Camp At National Sports Center Velodrome
Pan Am Games Record Holders Focus On Upcoming Caribbean Games
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Blaine, MN (July 6, 2010) - The Trinidad & Tobago National Cycling Team, holders of two Pan Am Games records, have opened a three-week training camp at the National Sports Center Velodrome. The 11-man team is preparing for the upcoming Caribbean and Central American Games to be held July 17-August 1 in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.
The team, coached by US Olympian and multiple National Champion Erin Hartwell, selected the NSC Velodrome in Blaine as their training camp location based on its strong local racing schedule, the similarity of the track to the Mayaguez track and the proximity to several early July road races in Wisconsin and Illinois.
“The NSC Velodrome is a perfect place for the team to train,” noted Hartwell. “This is one of the 2 best velodromes in the United States, rivaled only by the indoor velodrome in Los Angeles. It also has a fond place in my heart. In 1992, I won the US Olympic Trials here and qualified for the Barcelona Olympics.”
During their camp, team members will conduct daily training sessions at the Velodrome and will compete with local racers during the weekly Thursday Night Lights racing series. On July 1, three members of the team raced in the top men’s category, earning the top three places in the Salsa King of the Sprints Keirin final.
Team members include Pan American Games record holder and gold medalist Cristopher Sellier, Pan Am Games silver medalist Njisane Philly and bronze medalist Azikiwe Kellar. Hartwell holds one of the NSC Velodrome’s longest-standing records, clocking a 1.06” 1000m Time Trial effort during the 1992 US Elite National Championships.
