Blaine, Minn. (December 3, 2012) – Sixty of the best boys and girls high school hockey teams in the Upper Midwest will battle in the 12th annual Schwan Cup hockey tournament, December 26-29. The tournament field is divided into four divisions each for boys’ and girls’.

There are some changes in the locations used for the boys’ divisions this year. The marquee boys’ gold division, with all eight teams ranked in the top 10, will play all their games at Ridder Arena, on the campus of the University of Minnesota. In the past, boys’ gold games and all boys’ championship games were held at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. The change was made because of Wild home games scheduled at the Xcel Energy Center on December 26 and 28.

The boys’ silver, bronze and open divisions will play all but their championship games at the Schwan Super Rink at the National Sports Center in Blaine. The four girls’ divisions will play their preliminary round games at the Schwan Super Rink and their championship games at Ridder Arena.

All the boys’ and girls’ championship games will be played at Ridder Arena, with the boy’s on December 28 and the girls’ on December 29.

Here is a summary of the 2012 Schwan Cup format:

Wednesday, December 26: Boy’s tournament begins. Boys’ gold division quarterfinals at Ridder Arena; all other boys’ quarterfinal games at the Schwan Super Rink.

Thursday, December 27: Boys’ gold division semifinals and consolation games at Ridder Arena. All other boys’ semifinals and consolation games at the Schwan Super Rink.

Girls’ tournament begins, with all divisions playing first round games at the Schwan Super Rink.

Friday, December 28: All boys’ championship games at Ridder Arena; all other boys’ division games at the Schwan Super Rink. Boys’ tournament concludes.

Girls’ second round games at the Schwan Super Rink.

Saturday, December 29: All girls’ championship games at Ridder Arena; all other girls’ division games at the Schwan Super Rink.

FOX Sports North will broadcast four Schwan Cup games, as part of their FOX Prep Zone high school hockey schedule. FSN will broadcast the boys’ silver division semifinals from the Schwan Super Rink, December 27, at 6 and 8:30 p.m.; and the silver and gold championship games from Ridder Arena, December 28, at 5:30 and 8 p.m.

Additionally, the National Sports Center’s in-house webcasting service, NSCgamecast, will provide live Internet broadcasts of all the games from Ridder Arena: boys’ gold division games on December 26 and 27, all boys’ championship games on December 28 and all girls’ championship games on December 29. The games will be free for live viewing. Once a game is completed, customers can purchase a copy of the game on a DVD for $25. DVD’s will be available for sale at Ridder Arena or by ordering from the National Sports Center.

Games can be viewed live at gamecast.nscsports.org.

In addition to the 60 high school varsity teams, Schwan Cup divisions will be offered for 48 junior varsity teams, and 48 youth teams. The youth teams will play at the Schwan Super Rink at the National Sports Center in Blaine, December 30-January 1. A total of 156 teams will participate in all the Schwan Cup divisions.

Schwan Cup is owned and presented by the National Sports Center and sponsored by the Schwan Food Company.

Here is a summary of the teams in the boys’ gold division. Rankings in parenthesis are from Let’s Play Hockey magazine, November 29, 2012, rankings.

The top boys’ high school division, the gold division, boasts a field with all eight teams ranked in the top ten in the state, according to Let’s Play Hockey magazine. The division also offers some interesting match-ups as the two top-ranked A teams in the state, Defending state champion St. Thomas Academy (#1A) and Breck (#2A) face-off against six powerhouse programs from the AA big-school division. Joining those two schools are Minnetonka (Schwan Cup champions in 2007 and 2009, and ranked #4AA); Edina (Schwan Cup champion in 2008, and #2 ranked AA team in the state); Hill-Murray (Schwan Cup champion in 2010 and ranked #6AA) and Duluth East (defending Schwan Cup champion and ranked #6AA). Rounding out the gold division is Burnsville (#7AA) and Blaine (#8AA).

Single-day ticket prices are $10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors. An all-tournament pass is $27 for adults and $20 for students and seniors. All tickets are general admission and may be purchased at the door.
