Summer 2015 Sports Management Internships

The National Sports Center, Schwan's USA CUP soccer tournament and the Minnesota Amateur Sports Commission in Blaine, Minnesota announce the following internship openings:

Registration Director for Star of the North Games
Intern will manage all aspects of registration, including processing incoming registrations and payments, communicating with coaches and athletes, keeping accurate records, managing a database, and troubleshooting.  Excellent organizational skills and commitment to first-class service are a must. Start: If available, this position can start as early as Late March-Early April 2015 on a part time basis until May when the position becomes full time.  

Webcasting Administration
Intern will manage NSC’s webcasting service of Schwan's USA CUP. The program will include producing/directing the 10-day broadcast, scheduling camera and on-air talent, promoting the product, DVD production and sales, troubleshooting issues and developing business plans. This position has elements of broadcast production and business management. Experience in using a TriCaster would be a plus. Start:  June 2015

Media Relations Coordinator
Intern(s) will write and assemble press kits, press releases, and research story ideas, write articles and handle media inquiries for events including Star of the North Games and Schwan's USA CUP. Start: May 2015

Video Producer
Intern(s) will help support the NSC’s video production team that produces a weekly video show, “NSCtv”, a daily video show during Schwan's USA CUP, and a promotional video. Candidate should have some experience with Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere software, and also some journalistic background of researching story ideas and script and article writing. Additional experience with the Adobe Creative Suite a plus.  Start: May 2015

Golf Programs Operations Coordinator
Intern will work with the day-to-day operations of the National Youth Golf Center. Duties will include developing /marketing the programs and facilities, as well as running an efficient golf facility. Strong verbal and problem solving skills are essential. Start: April-May 2015

Sports Administration & Event Management for NSC and MASC
Intern(s) will assist in the administrative organization of major amateur sporting events and projects sponsored by the NSC and MASC, including Schwan's USA CUP soccer tournament, NSC Cup, NSC All American Cup, USA Rugby, USA Ultimate and NSC Velodrome events.  Responsibilities will include registration, volunteer services, housing, transportation, officials, activities, campus operations, results/media, publications, special events, sponsorships, marketing, competition/programming, ticketing and more. Start: April-May 2015

Campus Operations Logistics
Intern will work with NSC Campus Operations staff. Duties will include but not be limited to pre-tournament set-up, execution of logistics requests, event management, post tournament tear-down and day to day facility management tasks. The candidate must be able to lift at least 40 pounds, have a flexible schedule and be able to work in fast paced, hands on working environment.  Start: May 2015

Schwan's USA CUP Dorm Advisor
During Schwan's USA CUP; dorms provide a campus living experience for some of the International and United States athletes. We are seeking responsible candidates who will bring diverse backgrounds, are multi-lingual and have outgoing personalities for these positions. As an advisor, you will serve as the immediate contact for individuals in your assigned dorm, answering questions, coordinating transportation, and enforcing policies. You must also stay in the dorm you are assigned during the tournament.  Start: July 2015

Hours -- During summer, hours are 40+ per week.  Interns should be flexible with time, as many positions require event work in evenings and weekends.  All positions are available for course credit as approved by your institution.

Compensation -- All positions are a paid stipend based on commensurate of experience.

Deadline -- Resumes and cover letters submitted prior to February 14, 2015 will be given preference.  Applicants will need to complete an in-person interview which will be conducted at the National Sports Center during the week of March 2-6, 2015. Alternate interview days may be accommodated.

Hospitality Manager

General Purpose

The hospitality manager will manage the operation of the food & beverage outlets and facilities which Includes but is not limited to the Hat Trick Café , Schwan Center, dormitory, dormitory kitchens/cafeteria and concessions.  Must have core knowledge of the food & beverage industry, products & business units. Must have Serve-Safe & Alcohol Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Develop new revenue producing hospitality business for the NSC 
  • Maximize existing business
  • Develop new sponsor relations
  • Approve food vendors for special events and all service vendors for the Hospitality Department .
  • Assist in preparation, implementation and monitoring of the Budgets for each Hospitality Manger. 
  • Communicating variances/factors that are impacting, PO's, pricing, identifying capital equipment needs
  • Sales tracking, summaries of performance indicators and plan comparisons as well as
  • Manage POS systems
  • Monitor and manage food orders and food providers
  • Manage dormitory  staff and usage
  • Assists staff in set up and production of events when necessary
  • Determine staffing levels and direct department Managers to carryout and adequately train staff
  • Reports health department findings to Senior Director
  • Corrects and responds to health department findings with assistance from hospitality managers

Education and Experience

  • Four year degree or equivalent
  • Core knowledge of hospitality industry and outdoor shows
  • 5-7 years previous hospitality, food and beverage or hotel experience
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organizational skills with a strong attention to detail
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel

Youth Soccer Coach

General Purpose

The National Sports center is seeking individuals to fill coaching positions for youth soccer programs.  These individuals must be responsible, organized, and dependable.  All coaches must have the desire to work with youth in the sport of soccer.  This is hourly, part-time position.

Responsibilities

  • To provide an enjoyable and safe sporting experience for an assigned group of participants while they learn individual and team games skills, sportsmanship and fair play
  • Coach an assigned group of children and focus on skill development, safety, fair play, sportsmanship and fun
  • Adhere to National Sports Center policies, rules, and objectives
  • Responsible for maintaining care of all NSC sports equipment

Sports Hall Monitor/Soccer League Monitor

Late October 2014-May 2015

The National Sports Center is looking for a few individuals to fill the position of Sports Hall Facility Monitor/League Monitor. We are seeking customer service minded individuals. Must be self – motivated, have excellent communication skills and the ability to problem solve. Individuals with referee credentials are strongly encouraged to apply. This position is part time with evening and weekend hours. Responsibilities/Duties include:

  • Act as liaison between coaches, players, parents, referees and the NSC staff.
  • Greet customers and be available to answer their questions. Provide information about game rules, schedules, waivers, monies owed, NSC events and facility use. Communicate any unresolved questions and concerns with NSC staff.
  • Collection of paperwork and payments. Make sure all forms are completed correctly.
  • Set up fields to prepare for use. Ensure equipment is in place and ready to use.
  • Communicate with referees and verify they are on site. Report no show referees to the Referee Assignor. Help games get started at the scheduled start time. Encourage referees to keep half times as short as possible.
  • Collect and record all game scores.
  • Walk around the facility and troubleshoot for problems, notify maintenance of any hazards or issues, help control disorderly children etc.
  • Calmly respond to crisis situations/incidents. As needed mediate dispute resolution between referees, coaches and players. Follow through by completing incident reports and paperwork.
  • Complete site closing duties. Help usher people out of the facility. Collect equipment and return to storage areas. Complete paperwork and summarize day’s events.
  • Assist with other duties as requested including administrative work such as mailings and phone calls.
  • Prevent food and beverages other than clear water from entering turfed facilities (Sports Hall and Sport Expo Center)


Systems Engineer - Business Technology Department

The systems engineer's role is to ensure the stability, integrity, and efficient operation of the business technology systems that support core organizational functions. This is achieved by monitoring, maintaining, supporting, and optimizing all the networked software and associated operating systems. This is an excellent opportunity to manage a wide range of challenges in an exciting sports programming and event environment.

This is a full-time position, with a full benefits package, located in Blaine, MN.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Managing and maintaining software applications and operating systems.
  • Completing configuration, installation and support of network assets.
  • Assessing the effectiveness and efficiency of existing systems.
  • Designing and proposing system design models with specifications to support and enhance stakeholder performance.
  • Maintaining documentation as it relates to system configuration, mapping, processes, and service records.
  • Responding to inquiries from staff, administrators, service providers, outside vendors, and customers to provide technical assistance, on-site, on-call, and remote support both within and outside of normal business hours.
  • Performing server and security audits, system backup procedures, and other recovery processes in accordance with the company's disaster recovery and business continuity strategies.

Preferred skills:

  • A team player with understanding of the company's goals and objectives.
  • Experience with network and PC operating systems including Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2/2012, and Mac OS X.
  • Experience with core software applications including Citrix XenApp, Citrix XenServer, and MS Sharepoint.
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Self motivated for problem solving with attention to details.
  • Analytical and creative problem solving abilities.
  • Ability to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
  • Ability to bend, squat, crawl and climb, and lift up to 100 pounds.
