2019 Sports Management and Media Internship Opportunities Minnesota Amateur Sports Commission (MASC) / National Sports Center (NSC)

The National Sports Center, USA CUP soccer tournament and the Minnesota Amateur Sports Commission in Blaine, Minnesota announce the following internship openings:

Sports Administration & Event Management for NSC and MASC

Interns (6-8 positions available) will assist in the administrative organization of major amateur sporting events and projects sponsored by the NSC and MASC.  These include Star of the North Games, USA CUP soccer tournament, NSC Cup, NSC All American Cup, USA Ultimate and NSC Velodrome events.  Responsibilities will include registration, volunteer services, housing, transportation, officials, activities, campus operations, special events, marketing, competition/programming, ticketing and more. Excellent organizational skills and commitment to the first-class service are a must. Start: May 14, 2019 

Campus Operations Logistics

The intern will work with the NSC Campus Operations staff. Duties will include but not be limited to pre-tournament set-up, execution of logistics requests, event management, post-tournament tear-down and day to day facility management tasks. The candidate must be able to lift at least 40 pounds, have a flexible schedule and be able to work in a fast-paced, hands-on working environment.  Start: May 14, 2019

Media Relations/Journalism

Intern will write and assemble press kits, press releases, and research story ideas, write articles and produce social media content for NSC events with a focus on USA CUP. Start: May 14, 2019

Video Producer

The intern will help support the NSC’s video production team that produces video feature stories, promotional and marketing videos, and content to support NSC events, such as educational videos. The focus of the internship is on producing daily video features during the USA CUP soccer tournament. Candidates should have experience with Adobe Premiere software as well as possessing a video production background. Researching story ideas, script and article writing will be a crucial part of the job. Additional experience with the Adobe Creative Suite and Camera operations are a plus.  Start: May 14, 2019


Duties will include shooting digital photos on assignment for the NSC media team during USA CUP. The intern will work in a team environment, often working with a reporter, and will be expected to play an active role in creative and journalistic decisions. Candidate must provide their own camera equipment, have excellent skills in Photoshop or equivalent photo-editing software. This is a limited-time internship, running for about three weeks. Start: about July 5, 2019.

Webcast Producer

Intern will manage the NSC’s live streaming production effort. The intern will work with a staff of contract producers and camera operators to produce live webcasts of selected NSC sports events, with a focus on producing live broadcasts of selected USA CUP games. Candidate should have some experience in the technical aspects of live broadcasting. This is a limited-time internship, running for about four weeks. Start: about June 22, 2019.

USA CUP Dorm Advisor

During USA CUP; dorms provide a campus living experience for some of the International and United States athletes. We are seeking responsible candidates who will bring diverse backgrounds, are multi-lingual and have outgoing personalities for these positions.  As an advisor, you will serve as the immediate contact for individuals in your assigned dorm, answer questions, coordinate transportation, and enforce policies.  You must also stay in the dorm you are assigned during the tournament.  Dates: July 9-22, 2019

Hours -- During summer, hours are 40+ per week.  Interns should be flexible with time, as many positions require event work in evenings and weekends. Interns MUST be available to work May 25-26, June 7-9, and July 10-22, 2019. The last day of the internship will be Friday, July 26, 2019.  All positions are available for course credit as approved by your institution. 

Compensation -- All positions are a paid bi-weekly stipend based on commensurate of experience.

Deadline -- Resumes and cover letters submitted prior to February 11, 2019, will be given preference.  Applicants will need to complete an interview which will be conducted at the National Sports Center during the weeks of February 18-March 8, 2019.  Alternate interview days may be accommodated.

Ice Resurface Operator

The NSC Super Rink is looking for part-time Ice Resufacer Operators to give a great experience to all of our customers. Operators will take guidance from our managers and supervisors to maintain the building, resurface the ice on time according to schedule, assist with maintaining the equipment and maintain the cleanliness of the building.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Ability to work nights and weekends
  • Must be responsible, and able to work with the public efficiently and courteously
  • Minimum of 18 years of age
  • High school graduate or GED equivalent

Assistant Mechanic

The National Sports Center is seeking qualified applicants for an Assistant Mechanic Equipment Manager position. Under the supervision of the Equipment Manager, the Assistant Equipment Manager assists and/or works independently repairing and maintaining various gasoline and diesel-powered golf course maintenance equipment. The Assistant Equipment Manager also assists in maintaining a clean service area and maintenance building, contributing to a preventive maintenance program, and places safety procedures as a top priority.

Assistant Mechanic Equipment Manager - Field and Turf Maintenance

Reports to: Equipment Manager; Director of Agronomy
Hours: 40 hours/week with some weekends and overtime
Salary: Pay dependent on experience and qualifications. Benefits possible.

Duties of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Inspects, diagnoses, adjusts and repairs mechanical defects/failures in various pieces of maintenance equipment, on a regular basis
  • Prioritizes equipment repair and maintenance work
  • Sets up and modifies equipment, as needed
  • Repairs and adjusts engines and cutting mechanisms on various heavy and light mowing equipment
  • Knowledge of 2- and 4-cycle engine diagnosis, repair, and maintenance
  • Ability to diagnose electrical issues
  • Other duties as assigned

Experience and training:

  • Previous experience maintaining equipment fleets required
  • Knowledge and safe operation of field maintenance equipment, including industrial mowers and hand trimmers

Equipment Operator - Field and Turf maintenance

The National Sports Center is seeking applicants for the 2018 summer outdoor season to assist in the maintenance and setup of our outdoor grass and field properties. This includes over 50 full-sized outdoor soccer fields, an 18-hole golf course and more.

Equipment Operator - Field and turf maintenance

Reports to: Golf Course Superintendent and Sports Field Manager
Classification: Full time, seasonal, non-exempt
Hours: 40 hours/week with some weekends and overtime
Salary: Dependent upon experience

Duties of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Mowing and maintaining high-quality turf, including seeding, sodding and trimming
  • Daily setup and maintenance of the golf course and sports fields, including raking bunkers, and marking and painting sports fields
  • Mulching, weeding and pruning landscape beds, shrubs, and trees
  • Cleaning and maintaining equipment and maintenance facility
  • Additional facility event setup duties, as assigned

Knowledge, abilities, and skills needed for this position:

  • Knowledge of golf course and sports field maintenance practices
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and the proper use of safety practices
  • Ability to operate various pieces of maintenance equipment
  • Ability to understand and carry out instructions to complete work assignments correctly and efficiently
  • Ability to perform manual labor, including standing, sitting, kneeling, and bending for an extended period of time, under various conditions
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds and occasionally 50 pounds
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions, including heat, humidity, cold, rain, and snow
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors and employees within all departments
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays, and evenings as required

Experience and training:

  • Previous experience in golf course or field maintenance a plus, but not required
  • Knowledge and safe operation of field maintenance equipment, including industrial mowers and hand trimmers or ability to learn

Hospitality Concessions & Catering Associate

Position Information

Position Description

The National Sports Center is looking for an energetic, self-motivated individual with an outgoing personality, hard work ethic, a clean/neat and professional appearance, and can provide excellent customer service. This individual will be a representation of the National Sports Center

Position Responsibilities

  • Greeting customers
  • Provide excellent customer service
  • Taking, assembling, and presenting food orders
  • Operating a cash register and requesting/receiving payment from customers
  • Cooking and preparing food – standing and constant moving
  • Assist in various food areas to ensure food and concessions are being prepared and packaged properly, and being delivered to the customer in a timely manner
  • Stocking concessions trailers and/or food or vendor stands
  • Assist in inventory counts to help with proper stock and rotation
  • Cleaning in accordance with the National Sports Center sanitary standards including but not limited to:
    • Sweeping and mopping floors
    • Cleaning walls, counters, kitchen and service equipment
    • Removing trash
  • Associate will be trained in multiple areas within the concessions and catering position

Position Qualifications

  • Physical Requirements: This position requires the ability to lift/pull/push/move/carry up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to operate commercial grade kitchen equipment such as popcorn popper, hotdog machine, kitchen ovens, etc.
  • Experience preferred but not necessary
