The National Sports Center is excited to announce it has signed 12 free agent interns for summer 2019. From 11 different schools, the NSC interns will team up to put on events, including USA CUP in July.
Let's meet the newcomers:
Aidan Berg – Media Intern
Aidan Berg is a rising junior at the University of Southern California, where he is studying journalism. He is also working toward minors in sports media studies and statistics. As a Media Intern, Aidan has the responsibility of creating content focusing on the NSC and its big events, as well as handling other media responsibilities such as press kits and tournament programs.
Although he is a Minneapolis native, Aidan had never been to the NSC, but he is an avid sports fan. He enjoys playing basketball, watching sports and listening to sports podcasts in his free time as well as watching TV shows and movies.
Alex Brunn – Logistics Intern
Alex Brunn is going to be a senior at St. Cloud State University in the fall, majoring in sport management.
As a logistics intern, Alex is looking forward to working the USA CUP because he has never experienced the event before. He enjoys golfing, playing basketball and going to concerts with his friends.
Hannah Grabow – Dorms Intern
Hannah Grabow is a recent University of Wisconsin-La Crosse graduate, majoring in sport management. She grew up in Appleton, Wisc., and is a big Green Bay Packers and Milwaukee Brewers fan. She is looking forward to getting to know everybody at the NSC well while expanding her sport knowledge.
Hannah likes to explore new restaurants, play volleyball, go to baseball games and go horseback riding in her free time. She is looking forward to exploring the twin cities this summer with the other interns.
Hannah hopes to visit Grabow, Germany, one day because of her last name.
Annika Johnson – Video Production Intern
Annika Johnson is a rising senior at Luther College where she majors in communication studies with a minor in visual communication. Annika is quite familiar with the NSC, having played in USA CUP when she was 17 and participating in other tournaments here as well.
Annika is excited to build on her passion for storytelling through video while working at the NSC. She also enjoys running, hammocking and spending time with her dog and two cats.
Jack Kortes – Registration/Volunteers Intern
Jack Kortes is a rising senior at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, where he studies sport management. He is looking forward to getting to know everyone at the NSC and also developing skills required of a sport management professional.
Jack is a self-described movie and TV show buff and also enjoys playing basketball in his free time.
Megan McCarty – Graphic Design Intern
Megan McCarty is a rising senior at the University of Minnesota Duluth where she double majors in graphic design and marketing. She will be creating promotional materials for the National Sports Center’s various programs as well as assisting with various social media posts and announcements. She is looking forward to working in a creative environment.
Megan knows the National Sports Center well, having played soccer here as a kid and attending the Joyful Noise concert on multiple occasions. In her free time, Megan enjoys hiking, playing soccer and hammocking.
Austin Oberfrank – Activities and Opening Ceremonies Intern
Austin Oberfrank attends Florida Gulf Coast University where he majors in Marketing with a concentration in event management. This will be Austin’s third summer working at the NSC.
Austin hopes to develop a stronger network with his colleagues and provide an energizing atmosphere for USA CUP participants.
He is a Spikeball Brand Ambassador and works for the Florida Gulf Coast University’s Programming Board.
Jeff Petersen – Sponsorship Intern
Jeff Petersen earned a degree in marketing at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in spring 2018. He is excited to gain more experience in the sports industry, especially in behind-the-scenes work.
Jeff has been around the National Sports Center because of a previous internship with the Minnesota United in which his key responsibility was to represent the United at the soccer tournaments held at the NSC. Outside of his sports interests (he’s a golfer and diehard Michigan Wolverines fan), Jeff enjoys watching movies and traveling. It is important to note that he hates Keith Urban.
Reigan Struck – Onboarding Intern
Reigan Struck will complete her studies at the College of St. Scholastica, where she majors in organizational behavior & management, in December 2019. She is responsible for conducting onboarding for new employees.
Reigan started working at the NSC in 2014 and played in multiple USA CUP tournaments. She enjoys hunting, fishing, hiking and gardening.
Grace Tafolla – Media Intern
Grace Tafolla is going to be a senior at the University of Iowa in the fall, studying journalism and mass communication. Grace grew up in Iowa City, Iowa, but has never been to USA CUP or the NSC.
At Iowa, Grace interns at the University of Iowa Athletic Department in Athletic Communications. She is also involved in Students Care, a nonprofit student club that helps college students with disabilities.
As a media intern, Grace is looking forward to improving her writing skills and working in a fast-paced setting. She is also excited to work in a new environment and to get to know all of the interns.
Grace likes to watch sports, spend time outside and hang with family and friends during her free time. Her favorite teams are the Iowa Hawkeyes, Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Lakers.
Michael Villafana – Referee and Team Registration Intern
Michael Villafana graduated from Seton Hall University this May, earning degrees in sport management and marketing.
Michael’s role at the NSC is to help manage referees and team registration. Michael is looking forward to learning about how tournaments are run, seeing the execution of a tournament and comparing the different tournaments hosted at the NSC. He has attended the USA CUP before as a spectator.
Michael is a big sports fan. He follows the Vikings, Twins, Timberwolves and the Wild along with Seton Hall. He enjoys “outdoorsy activities,” community service and theatrical performances.
Tali Ziegler – Registration and Guest Players Intern
Tali Ziegler just graduated from Bemidji State University, where she studied sport management and business administration with an emphasis in management.
Tali’s main role will be matching players with teams who are in need of additional players, and she is looking forward to learning about everything that goes into hosting a large scale event. She loves to hike and go fishing, and has a stated goal to visit as many Major League Baseball stadiums as possible.
