The annual Stick It to Cancer hockey tournament is set for April 13-15 at the Schwan Super Rink on the National Sports Center’s campus. This year’s tournament will draw 50 youth and adult female teams to play for a higher cause -- to raise funds to fight breast cancer.
Stick It to Cancer referees donate their fees to the charitable donation to the University of Minnesota Masonic Cancer Center.
Over the two decades the tournament has been held, a total of $809,723 has been donated to breast cancer research. For the most of those years, the beneficiary has been the Masonic Cancer Center at the University of Minnesota, and this year’s donation will go to the same organization.
Many of the teams compete to raise the most money, but you don’t have to be playing in the tournament to support the cause. There are several easy ways for the public to donate online.

Interested in donating your time, instead of money? That’s great too, as the Stick It to Cancer tournament relies on volunteer workers to increase the financial donation at the end of the day. Some of the jobs are PA announcer, timekeepers, and hospitality room hosts. Volunteer shifts are two hours long. They start Friday evening, and run all day Saturday and Sunday, with many different options.
Participating teams also step forward to fill volunteer jobs, and all referees donate their time to tournament operations, resulting in an even larger donation to cancer research.

Last year’s Stick It to Cancer fund raising champion was the Olson Fish Company Elks team, with a grand total of $17,556 raised. The total tournament donation to the Masonic Cancer Center in 2017 was $46,245.
